Sun Protection, Reinvented
Support Your Skin from the Inside Out
Here in The Bahamas, we love our sunshine but too much UV exposure can speed up aging, cause pigmentation, and increase skin cancer risk. Sunscreen is essential, but your skin deserves more protection, especially with our year-round sun. This June, we’re sharing evidence-based ways to protect your skin from the inside out.
1. Get Moving
Physical activity doesn’t just boost mood, it can help lower your risk of skin cancer. Aim for 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Just don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat and SPF while outdoors!
2. Smart Supplements
Adding vitamins C and E to your daily routine can reduce sun damage over time.
3. Eat the Mediterranean Way
Olive oil, leafy greens, tomatoes, fish, and legumes can fight UV damage with their antioxidants and healthy fats. Bonus? They’re great for your heart, too.
4) Plant Power: Natural Skin Shields
Some plants have superpowers when it comes to sun protection.
Two in particular stand out:
- Polypodium leucotomos (don’t worry about the name!) is a tropical fern that’s been turned into a supplement. It helps protect your skin from the inside by reducing inflammation and sunburn after UV exposure.
- Green tea extract is packed with antioxidants that help your skin fight off damage from the sun and pollution. Drinking green tea is great, but the extract is much more powerful and concentrated.
These aren’t replacements for sunscreen—but they’re great extra support, especially in our strong Bahamian sun.
5. Eat Your Colors: Carotenoids for Glow & Protection
You’ve probably heard that carrots are good for your eyes but they’re also amazing for your skin!
That is thanks to carotenoids, natural pigments found in brightly colored fruits and vegetables. They give foods like:
- Carrots and sweet potatoes their orange color (beta-carotene)
- Tomatoes and watermelon their red hue (lycopene)
When you eat enough of these foods, the carotenoids actually build up in your skin and act like a mild, natural sunscreen. They don’t block sunburn, but they help your skin recover faster and stay healthy over time.
